The Unsung Heroes of Education: Nominating Classified School Employees for the 2024 RISE Award

As we begin a new academic year, it's essential to acknowledge the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support students, teachers, and families. The North Carolina Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award is an excellent opportunity to shine a light on these unsung heroes and recognize their invaluable contributions.

The Importance of Classified School Employees

School employees are the backbone of our education system. They work in various roles, from paraprofessionals and clerical staff to custodians and security personnel. These dedicated individuals ensure that schools run smoothly, providing a safe and supportive environment for students to learn and grow.

According to Governor Roy Cooper, "School employees are the backbone of our education system." They work tirelessly behind the scenes to support students, teachers, and families. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes of North Carolina schools and the crucial work that they do every day.

What is the RISE Award?

The RISE Award was passed by Congress in 2019 and overseen by the U.S. Department of Education. The award honors classified school employees who demonstrate excellence in their roles. Winners are selected based on their outstanding work performance, school and community involvement, leadership, local support, and their ability to enhance the image of classified school employees.

Who Can Nominate?

Public school units, school administrators, professional associations, labor organizations, educational service agencies, nonprofit entities, private schools, and their representatives can nominate individuals for the RISE Award. Parents and students can also submit nominations.

The Nomination Process

The application period is now open, and nominations must be submitted by September 30th at 5 p.m. through a secure online form. The Office of the Governor of North Carolina will honor nominees and finalists, while the U.S. Department of Education will recognize the honoree and share their story to inspire excellence among classified school employees.

What Are the Benefits of the RISE Award?

The two winners in North Carolina will be nominated to the U.S. Department of Education by November 1st. The U.S. Secretary of Education will select a single classified school employee from among the nominees to receive the RISE Award in the spring.
