A Glimpse into the Past: The Desegregation of UL-L

Ruth Foote, a renowned historian and author, will lead a discussion on the remarkable story of the 76 black students who integrated the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 70 years ago.

This pivotal moment in history was marked by the U.S. Western District of Louisiana's permanent injunction in July 1954, two months after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Ruth Foote, a dedicated author and historian, brings her expertise and passion to this topic. With her background as co-founder and editor of Creole Magazine, she has proven herself to be a respected voice in the field of Louisiana history. Her experience as an award-winning journalist and lecturer ensures that this program will be both informative and engaging.

A Journey Through Time: The Antebellum South

The second installment of the series takes place on October 5th at 11 AM, with Dr. Sarah Hyde exploring the private and public education systems before the Civil War in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. This fascinating look into the past will reveal the complexities and nuances of education during this tumultuous period.

Healing Communities: Education and Preservation

The final program in the series, scheduled for November 7th at 5:30 PM, features Leona Tate, founder of the Leona Tate Foundation for Change. She will share her inspiring story of integration in New Orleans and discuss the impact of historic preservation on healing communities.
