University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Student Association Embarks on New Initiatives
On Wednesday, September 11th, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Student Association (SA) gathered for a meeting to usher in new senators, assign committee members, and delve into campus engagement.
New Senators Take Oath
The meeting commenced with the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected senators. SA President Emma Latus led the proceedings, welcoming the following senators: Hannah Duke, Caden Ayala, Cisco Garcia, Charisse Chan, Armando Garcia, Hephzibah Ohihoin, Gavin Hanke, and Emma Wittman.
Avery Ladd-Winders, vice president of the SA, announced that certain Senate seats for campus organizations and colleges are yet to be filled. Students can volunteer or be nominated by a current senator. The nomination papers can be found in UWL students' emails and are due on September 25th, 2024, at 4:00 PM. Please submit them via email to Dean of Students Kara Ostlund at [email protected] or in person at 149 Graff Main Hall.
Policy Update
Ostlund informed the SA that the policy regarding student campaigns in UWL residence halls has been revised, reverting back to one passed by the Board of Regents in 1988. She ensured that any outdated language is explained and provided a link to the current acting policy: https://www.uwlax.edu/globalassets/offices-services/reslife/campaigning-in-the-residence-halls-policy.pdf.
Committee and Organization Reports
Senators Whitman and Ohihoin announced that the Asian Student Organization (ASO) and Black Student Unity (BSU) have relocated from Centennial Hall to The Student Union. VSA Senator Aola suggested a moment of silence for the lives lost on September 11th, 2001, and for those who have served, which was observed by the SA.
Operation RiverWatch Initiative
SA President Emma Latus brought attention to Operation RiverWatch, an initiative started in 2006 to prevent alcohol-related accidental drownings in the Mississippi River. Latus described how students will walk along the river to assist and redirect any intoxicated individuals away from potential danger. The SA has taken on this initiative and is offering incentives for fellow campus organizations to volunteer.
Kyle Burke, director of University Centers, explained that $50 for every night signed up will be deposited into the organization's Student Faculty Association (SFO) bank account. For an entire weekend, an organization would receive $150. Burke expressed excitement for this opportunity to protect the UWL and La Crosse community and for new student organizations to flourish with more resources.
Remembrance
Ostlund provided a moment of remembrance for Hamud Faal, a UWL student who tragically fell and passed away in the Mississippi River in February 2022. Ostlund emphasized the importance of RiverWatch volunteers, stating 'this is something that hits home and it is our responsibility to look out for Eagles.'
Upcoming Meetings
The Student Association will meet again on Wednesday, September 18th, to discuss possible resolutions and new business.
